A Voice Against Covid-19

A Voice Against Covid-19
Project funded by: CEI (Italian Episcopal Conference)

In collaboration with: Diocese of Lira and Kotido.

Duration: June 2020-August 2020

In this pandemic period, which unfortunately also reached Uganda, we want to provide the population with a prevention service aimed at spreading greater awareness of the Covid-19 emergency through the use of radios as a tool to reach capillary rural communities and people forced into isolation in their homes, in their villages. For many communities, radio is the only means of information available for up-to-date information on the situation and the correct behavior to be followed.

Institute for International Cooperation and Development in partnership with the diocese of Lira and the diocese of Kotido will implement a sensitization and education program against COVID-19 through two communities radio, Radio Wa and Voice of Karamoja (Etoil a Karamoja) . Its broadcasts in all the region of Lango and Karamoja (3 million inhabitants). The first radio was born in 2001 and it was the first catholic radio in North Uganda. It has been an important focal point during the rebellion of Kony and it has helped to bring back more than 1.500 children-soldiers. With the campaign "Managing Corona", Radio WA wants to inform and help the people to manage the virus, avoiding fake news and myths. During the 3 months implementation, it will broadcast 6 radio talks shows with the presence of experts (health, education, security, ..). Through the reporters and journalists, the radio will share the problems that the people are facing, but also explain and share good practices for avoiding the infection. The radio will reply to the doubts and enquiries of the listeners, but also sensitize them. Moreover, the radio will organize a mini drama series to broadcast through the radio, allowing the youth to spread messages of hope and responsibility. Lastly, the radio will distribute sensitization materials in the 14 diocese's health centres and parishes. For the implementation of the activities, the radio will use both English and local language.  The second one, is managed by Kotido Diocese. With the implementation of the project "One voice for Covid-19", C&D in partnership with the Diocese of Kotido will provide a prevention service in order to promote knowledge and awareness on the pandemic. The project will sensitize the population of Karamoja on the effects of the virus, on the good practices for avoiding the infection and on the modalities of respond to the virus. In collaboration with the diocese, the radio will broadcast not only spot messages, but also radio talk show and live radio talk show and distribute sensitization materials in the health centre. The radio will implement 5 radio talk shows per month for a total amount of 15 radio talk shows during 3 month of implementation. During the activities, health experts and local authorities will participate to the different events promoting real news and information. The broadcast of spot messages will explain easily the infection and pandemic. Moreover, 3 live radio talk show from 3 health centres will create sensitization moment and awareness moment. All the activities will be implement both in English and both in local language.

Purpost and objectives of the assignment

According the project document presented and approved by Italian Episcopal Conference, the radioes will implement the following activities:
- 7 radio talk show per month for a total of 21.
- 96 spot messages per month for a total of 90
- Distribution of sensitization materials materials provided by C&D
- 3 live radio talk show from the diocese's health centers by Radio Wa based in Lira
- Broadcasting of 12 mini dramas and 3 broadcast of community meeting already registered by Etoil a Karamoja – Voice of Karamoja based in Kotido.

We believe that this activity of awareness through the radio is a highly effective intervention for several reasons:
- because it reaches a large number of people (the total catchment area of the two radios is 3 million people)
- because the programs are in English and in the local language
- because radio, in Uganda, is the media most followed by the local population, and therefore the most effective way to enter all the huts even in the most remote villages of the savannah.

The project is funded with funds from the 8xmille of the Italian Catholic Church
