Objective: To help alleviate the impact of drought cycles on agro-pastoral activities in Karamoja through the improvement of water and livestock structures, establishment and training at village level of the Commissions for the Use of Water Resources and Pump mechanics.

Results 2009 at the end of the project

Zootechnics section

1. Theoretical-practical training of 35 paraveters in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit (14 by Moroto and 21 by Pokot) in collaboration with KADP in the Moroto District and Happy Cow in Nakapiripirit District;

2. Build 7 corridors for livestock vaccination;

3. abolished the Moroto slaughterhouse and formed two meat control inspectors;

4. 1.209 animal specimens (956 bovine, 187 goats and 66 sheep) were obtained from 14 sub-districts of the 5 districts of the Karamoja region (350 from Moroto, 179 from Nakapiripirit, 50 from Kaabong, 302 from Kotido and 328 from Abim). Testing of brucellosis, tick and worm disease.

Water & sanitation section

1.150 water wells with rehabilitated hand pump;

2.150 village committees for the care and maintenance of wells established during the rehabilitation of wells and formed for two days;

3.45 local pump mechanics for wells formed for 10 days;

4.70 drinkers for cattle built;

5.30 rainwater collection tanks installed in schools and health centers;

6.Restable the dam at Kagingole;

7. Selected and analyzed 600 water sources and the results obtained were published on monthly bulletins.

Beneficiaries

The most vulnerable agro-astronomical communities in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit, particularly those in remote and marginalized areas - 150,000 expected beneficiaries

In 2008, 78,952 estimated beneficiaries. In 2009, 71,000 estimated beneficiaries.

Year 2008

Results

1. Identify the 30 public institutions, between schools and outpatient clinics, where to install rainwater storage tanks;

2. Terminate the procedures for purchasing the tanks and the tools necessary for their installation in the 30 selected public institutions;

3. Install 10 tanks in 8 public institutions in the Moroto District;

4. distribution of tanks in the selected institutions in the district of Nakapiripirit;

5. rehabilitated, in 2008, 86 hand-operated pumps in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit;

6. Training course of 10 days for 45 handpump mechanics from the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit.

6. Established and formed 20 local committees responsible for the care and maintenance of the wells.

7. Builders / rehabilitated 20 drinking water pumps for both rehabilitated wells and areas proposed by the district veterinary office or at the request of local communities.

8. Water Test Analysis - Water samples collected from 199 wells, rivers and unprotected water sources used by communities for water collection and animal husbandry in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit. Sample analyzes were conducted on the chemical, physiological and bacteriological composition of water.

9. Publish 3 bulletins, August / November / December, for the dissemination of the results from the analysis of water samples.

10. Take 241 samples of animals, cows, goats and sheep from farms in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit. The samples were analyzed at the C & D Karamoja Laboratory. Each community has received a report on the health conditions of herds and the treatments to be applied in case of infections or pathologies.

11. Two CAHWS (Community Animal Health Workers) courses were organized in the Moroto District (14 participants) and Nakapiripirit (21 participants), both courses lasted for 15 days. Each participant, at the end of the course, received a veterinary kit containing antibiotics, syringes and sprays for treating pests and a bicycle to facilitate the movement in the area.

12. Select areas intended for the construction of 7 corridors for cattle crushes in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit.

13. Selected 2 inspectors for the management of the Moroto Tunnel.

Results

- the first phase of investigation into the territory for the identification of the 90 wells to rehabilitate and the 60 drinking water bottles to be constructed: censuses 156 wells

- rehabilitated 103 wells

- built 58 drinking water tanks and 5 holes for water drainage

- 33 training courses for a total of 90 village committees formed

- 1 training course - 20 mechanical pump sizes (to which a repair kit was delivered).
