General objective: Reducing vulnerability and strengthening capacity to cope with droughts for the most fragile communities in the Karamoja region and livestock health.

Specific objectives: prevention of animal diseases; Increased availability of clean water.

Results 2010

- 4,086 blood samples taken and analyzed on cows, goats and sheep;

- investigation of the status of 150 wells utilizing the well (WUC) and formation of 116 WUCs;

- Survey of 30 rainwater collection systems, formation of 30 WUCs and distribution of 30 tool kits for small repairs;

- 35 Paravetary (CAHWs) training;

- distribution of monthly newsletters to district veterinary departments (DVD) of the seven districts of Karamoja;

- final publication on epidemiological investigations

- final workshop with the participation of the MAAIF (Ministry of Agriculture) and the Central Laboratory of Entebbe; (UPDF, DPC), CAHWs and central representatives of alert systems in the emergencies of the seven districts (RDC, LCV and CAO), Head of Department (DPO, DVD, DWD, DEO, DISO) Karamoja, UN Agencies and NGOs in Karamoja

Effects

- Consciousness by the districts of the need for a capillary monitoring of animal diseases

- Greater knowledge of the disease and the necessary care by the population of their animals

- Opening a direct channel on the needs of the population and the breeders with the Ministry of Agriculture, which began during the workshop.

Year 2009

Results

- analyzed 1,040 animal samples in 6 sub-districts of the Moroto District. Of the 1,040 691 (66.4%) were cattle, 233 (22.4%) were goats and 116 (11.1%) were sheep; 622 (59.8) females and 218 (20.9%) males.

- Examined 1,040 animal samples (blood and serum) also for worms and brucellosis. Positive results 33 goats 16.5%, 11 sheep 10.4% and 62 bovine 9.8%.

- 119 bovine stool specimens (70 from Nakiloro subcontinent, 19 from Aworobu and 30 from Kalukamer): presence of 40% of diarrhea in the stools.

- 154 bovine specimens examined in the villages of Loporokocho, Kokwatum, Alakas and Kaichom in the subunits of Amudat, Karita and Moruita in Pokot County, Nakapiripirit district; Taken 154 blood samples and 32 from the lymph nodes.

- survey on the status of 111 village committees for the care and maintenance of wells;

- Survey on 21 rainwater collecting tanks.
